Breathing techniques

Some of the most profound truths, the “secrets” of the universe, are contained in the most simple, basic facts of life. Breathing is one of those secrets. We don’t realise the tremendous significance and potential power contained within each breath.You can live for quite a few days without food and survive without water for a lengthy period of time. But how long can you survive without your next breath of air?

When you digest this truth, suddenly an awareness envelopes you that your entire future, your life itself, totally depends upon whether or not you receive your next inhalation. Your guaranteed life expectancy is literally only one breath! All your wealth, all your possessions, all your relationships, power, prestige, hopes, and plans are useless unless you are breathing.

Hence the first principle of Kundalini Yoga is:

Value Your Breath

Various breathing techniques are taught in a Kundalini Yoga class. They are referred to as Pranayam. Long deep breathing is essential to master. It will calm the mind, balance the emotions, and harmonize the body, mind and spirit.

Breath of Fire is a pranayam that will not only increase your lung capacity (so you can easily breathe slower and deeper) but it will also:

  • Strengthen your nervous system
  • Purify your bloodstream
  • Energise, stimulate, and wake you up!
  • Increase your vitality

In a Kundalini Yoga class the breath is most important. Learning these breathing techniques and mastering them, equips you with the necessary tools to make profound changes in your life.

Kriya

The practice of Kundalini Yoga balances the glandular system, strengthens the nervous system and enables us to harness the energy of the mind and the emotions, so we can be in control of ourselves, rather than being controlled by our thoughts and feelings.

A Kriya is a set of exercises which focus on a particular aspect of the body; for example digestion and elimination. Performing the exercise correctly and applying a particular form of breathing for a designated period of time is fundamental to the technology of Kundalini Yoga.

Yogi Bhajan said:

“If you can breathe, and just lean in the right direction, you’ll be benefited.”

Deep Relaxation

The ability to relax is a divine quality. We are more centred and become more sensitive to the energy patterns of life. The state of consciousness we experience in this deep relaxation will not just be sleep. Deep relaxation alters the glandular balance in the blood and alters the functioning of the brain.

Meditation

Meditation is the process of controlling and transcending the waves of the mind, allowing the flow of radiance from the soul.

Meditation is for everyone. It uses the inherent self-sensory system, the mind, and the body. Through the use of refined patterns, meditation creates a communication between you and your mind, and between your mind and your body.

Meditations which use mantra, work on the upper palate of the mouth, which controls the autonomic system and the impulsations of the old brain and limbic systems.
Meditation:

  • Develops the Neutral (Meditative) Mind
  • Takes us from a finite to an Infinite perception of reality, by connecting us to the clarity of the soul
  • Promotes a sense of well-being, inner peace, stability, and calm
  • Develops the intuition
  • Releases reactions and unconscious habits, subconscious fears and blocks, and builds the spontaneous and intuitive link to awareness itself
  • Encourages mastery over transforming emotion to devotion
  • Promotes the ability to focus energy, enhancing effectiveness and efficiency
  • Promotes clarity of mind, mental awareness, and the ability to be present
  • Resolves core issues of stress-producing patterns
  • Develops the frontal lobe of the forehead, which controls your personality
